WiFi in St. Maarten

Haven't updated this in quite a while.

Many places now have FREE wifi. Be sure to carry your computer in something watertight as sometimes a dinghy ride in the Simpson Bay Lagoon can be quite wet depending upon your dinghy and weather.

Here's a few places accessible from Simpson Bay:

MacDonalds near Simpson Bay Bridge (use Palapa dinghy dock)
Bubble Tea in same building as MacDonalds (use Palapa dinghy dock)
Ric's Sports Bar near Simpson Bay Bridge (has dinghy dock)
Taco Macho - next to Texaco station (might be allowed to tie up behind gas station at Texaco dock, or use Palapa dock and walk towards airport, or use Portofino marina behind Gourmet Marche and walk just beyond the Shell station in the direction of the bridge)
Blue Martini, ex-Fathoms, (between Bobby's Boatyard and Turtle Pier) has dinghy dock
Jimbo's Mesquite Grill at the Simpson Bay Marina - use marina dinghy dock
Cappuccino Diner Bar & Restaurant (across from FedEx & Domino's Pizza) - use dock behind FedEx?
Turtle Pier restaurant at Turtle Pier Hotel (Airport road) & Marina (dinghy dock in the lagoon) Happy hour, too!

Not so Hot spot in Falmouth Antigua

We've heard from a couple of boats (December 2008 & February 2009) that the Hot Hot Hot Spot in Falmouth Antigua is not so hot.

That's too bad because it was OK (not great) when were were their for the Antigua charter yacht show the previous year in December 2007.

WIFI in ANGUILLA

As mentioned in our posts on a couple of other blogs (http://allaboutboats.blogspot.com/ our personal sailing blog & also on our yacht charter blog http://allaboutyachtcharters.blogspot.com/) we are now in Anguilla and we have wifi on the boat... HURRAY.

We are in Road Bay and we are using the services of Weblinks. Here is their URL:

I was told that their antenna is on the south end of the bay, which would be to starboard if you are facing the beach.

We tried to subscribe to their service on a Sunday using their online system but we were unsuccessful. I called them on Monday morning and was quickly set up with an account over the phone. The cost is US$20/week.

We were online for 5 hours Monday afternoon as we had not checked our email for a couple of days and had about 1500 messages... So It Goes :) We had pretty good service until about 5-ish pm when it became a bit spotty. In the evening we kept getting disconnected and then this morning (Day 2) we would only be online for 3-5 minutes at a time. We did a few things such as change the placement of the antenna, removed the router from our configuration, put the router back, remove our AP and hardwire into the router... we still experienced the same problems and then around 9:30am things are great. I assume it was something on their end as we are still swinging on our anchor just the same and we haven't changed any settings... Perhaps the technician came to work and tweaked something. I don't really care. I'm just so happy to have internet access on the boat again...

We would appreciate any wifi info for the Caribbean

We would appreciate any information about obtaining wifi access (free or pay for service) on one's boat throughout the Caribbean... Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, down the chain to Trinidad, Venezuela, and over through Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Perhaps there's an internet cafe that is easily accessible that you'd like to mention.

What equipment do you use? Especially MAC users!!!

We passed a billboard the other day about the local St. Maarten phone company offering wifi. I sent them an email for more information but no response so far.

Free wifi access in Simpson Bay Lagoon St. Maarten

We subscribe to a local ISP for our wifi service, but there are times when the system is down and we need to find other means to be connected to the big world out there.

We just discovered that our wonderful French bakery, Le Sucriere (see previous post) next to the FedEx building in Simpson Bay Lagoon, offers free wifi. Sit out on the covered terrace with an excellent cafe and croissant and catch up on your email.

Some other places that offer free wifi in the Lagoon in St. Maarten are:

Rick's Cafe
McDonald's
Place across the street from FedEx
Jimbo's at Simpson Bay Marina
Some people get free wifi outside of the Soggy Dollar Bar at the Palapa Marina

For an inexpensive, no frills, internet cafe try Moc's computers. Just across the street from Plaza de Lago (Simpson Bay Marina) next to where the Asian Food Store used to be and the Duty Free liquor store. Moc is a nice guy and cheaper than the place in the marina complex. MOC's IS NO LONGER IN BUSINESS (SUMMER 2007)

Don't have much information about the French side of St. Martin. I heard that you can get wifi close to the Port St. Louis marina out in Marigot Bay. Someone told me that you can get wifi as far in the Simpson Bay Lagoon on the French side of St. Martin as Time Out Boatyard (Time Out has a marine flea market the first Saturday of the month during season). There's a service called Orange? Hopefully, you can find more information about it. Let me know!
